Project Overview HOT & TOT Feasibility Study for the Atlanta Region
Study Description & Purpose

In February 2004, the Georgia Senate adopted Resolution 575, requesting that the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) “undertake a comprehensive study of the feasibility of implementing HOT Lanes along the highways of the metropolitan Atlanta area and implementing HOV and HOT Lanes along the GA 400 Corridor.” The resolution further stated, “Opening the existing HOV lanes to paying customers as HOT Lanes is a potential means to reduce traffic congestion and to benefit all highway users.” On behalf of GDOT, the Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) has initiated the study.

Specifically, the HOT and TOT Study seeks to identify corridors where HOT Lanes and/or TOT Facilities will provide congestion relief and enhance safety and efficiency to justify their installation. Further, the feasibility of implementing HOT as a component of the current and planned HOV system will be addressed through the identification and refinement of alternatives in order to achieve study goals.

All recommendations will be presented to the Georgia General Assembly at the conclusion of the study.
